I honestly don’t remember a time when I didn’t know what yoga was. I have always been involved in some form of creative expression and had a connection with my body. From an early age, I enjoyed dance and gymnastics which then lead into dance aerobics and yoga during college. My yoga practice was sporadic at best during my early 20s as I slowly navigated my way through those formative years. When I returned to the United States, after living in Norway, it was difficult to tap back into the inner strength that I developed while living away from everything familiar. As I stepped on my mat in New York City, it took a while, but that strength and self expression came back and I felt my independance surfacing again. But this independence also came with a community; my heart had found home again. I became a teacher in order to share this expression of self-strength with others and help them find their own empowerment from the practice. I am an RYT-500 certified teacher and have multiple trainings in restorative/therapeutic yoga as well as Yin Yoga and meditation. Because learning and expanding knowledge is something I value in yoga and in life, I have also studied Hot Power Yoga and currently am completing trainings to become a Yoga Tune-Up Therapist. While many studios combine Yin & Restorative into one class offering, the practices are very different. In the Yin practice, we hold deep stretches in order to open up connective tissues, fascia and joints, as well as stimulate chi meridians. The Restorative practice’s core principle is complete release of all tension or stretch, in order to shed the layers of armor that are built on a daily basis, especially in NYC! In a city that always runs on fumes, we need these slower, internal practices. Not only to relieve symptoms of stress, but also to infuse our immune system so that we can do battle for one more day!
