Session 2: Classical Dance Instruction, 4-6pm

Embody the concepts discussed in the lecture, and explore the vocabulary through a guided practice in the forms and expressions in the Mohini Attam style, a Classical form that focuses on circling, swaying and undulating movements similar to that of the bodies of water in Kerala (from where this style originates).

Background on Classical Indian Dance:

Classical Indian dance is the most complete yoga. Concealed beneath the rich and intricate fabric of Indian dance lies a mind ~ body discipline that is at once aesthetic, symbolic and yogic. Its mythological themes contain a wisdom that is still relevant to our times. It is not a mere coincidence that all of the gods of the Hindu pantheon are expressed in the form of dance. Nor is it a coincidence that aesthetic rapture is compared to spiritual ecstasy in Indian art. Every element of Indian Dance is steeped in principles of Yoga. Its form, its thematic content and the aesthetic experience it generates are subtle, scientific applications of the principles of yoga.
